WASHINGTON, DC — Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11) released the following statement:
"Our community grieves and prays for the family who lost a loved one struggling with mental health issues. We pray for the officer involved, their family, and all law enforcement officers across our community.
It is difficult for a reasonable person to view the Lancaster Police Officer's body camera footage and think actions taken in self-defense were unwarranted. When being charged at by an individual brandishing a knife, there is little opportunity for de-escalation.

As our nation continues responding to the challenges presented by COVID-19, significant progress is underway on the development of safe and effective vaccines and therapeutic treatments. This work is being led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, and coordinated across numerous federal departments and agencies along with the private sector in what is known as Operation Warp Speed.

Locally and across the nation, K-12 school districts and post-secondary institutions have begun to welcome students back for instruction. With the input of parents, our local schools have put together instructional models that will support students and educators and create safe environments to foster learning. Post-secondary institutions have responded as well. As instruction continues, our K-12 and post-secondary institutions will continue to need additional support.
