Smucker Defends the Second Amendment

March 11, 2021

WASHINGTON- Today, Rep. Lloyd Smucker released the following statement after opposing H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446:

"Since the start of the 117th Congress in January, House and Senate Democrats and President Biden have gone it alone hiding behind empty soundbites calling for bipartisanship. First, they pushed through a $1.9 trillion partisan spending wish list. Next, they voted for a federal takeover of elections and public funding of campaigns. Now, congressional Democrats are taking a hatchet to citizens' Second Amendment rights. I oppose these bills because they infringe on the rights of law-abiding individuals," said Smucker.

H.R. 8 requires a background check for every firearm transfer or sale, even those between family and friends. H.R. 1446 grants unelected government officials the ability to indefinitely delay firearm purchases in the event of technical difficulties with background checks and undermining the NICS background check system.

"I will continue to support in Congress the constitutionally granted Second Amendment rights of Americans," said Smucker.
