WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker and members of the House Budget Committee on Thursday approved legislation that would form a bipartisan commission to study cutting the national debt, which reached $34 trillion this week.
The bill, co-sponsored by Smucker and Maine Democrat Jared Golden, would charge the commission with drafting a plan by May 2025 to improve the federal government’s long-term fiscal stability and “propose recommendations designed to balance the budget at the earliest reasonable date.”

Smucker offered comments in favor of creating a commission, based on his experience serving as a member of a successful commission during his time as a State Senator in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker on Wednesday testified before a House committee in support of forming a bipartisan commission to recommend policies that would help remedy the national debt, which reached $33.8 trillion this week.
“I believe our debt and our fiscal trajectory pose an existential threat to America’s future,” Smucker said at a Wednesday meeting of the House Budget Committee. “And I think establishing a commission is our best chance of addressing it.”
