Smucker Statement on Black History Month
LANCASTER, PA. — U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.) issued the following statement on Black History Month:
"During Black History Month, we celebrate African Americans who made history, who broke barriers and who established significant firsts. Although the barriers they had to overcome were disgraceful, their efforts were marked by character and grace.
"There are so many inspiring stories in our own community of individuals who have impacted all of us through their courage and conviction. We are grateful for them and for the goodness they exhibited.
"A strong community is built on the pillars of truth, justice and equality, as surely as it is on stone, steel and concrete. The pioneers in the quest for equal opportunity should never be forgotten, nor should the nature of their struggle to change laws and attitudes. We should always honor the lives they lived, the principles they stood for and the legacy they achieved."
