Smucker Visits Third-Generation Small Business

August 19, 2022

Learns about the impact of workforce shortages, supply chain issues, and inflation

York, PARep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11) visited Saubel's Market in York County to hear how the third-generation family-owned business has been impacted by workforce shortages, supply chain issues, and inflation.

"Family-owned and operated businesses like Saubel's help build strong communities. I appreciated learning how they have adapted to supply chain issues and workforce shortages. Small businesses, just like families across the nation, are also significantly impacted by inflation. To help build a strong economy Congress needs to continue advancing proven pro-growth policies to support local businesses, increase take-home pay and reduce the cost of living for American families. Congress must also rein in out-of-control spending policies which have contributed to higher inflation. Addressing these issues will be critical to ensuring family-owned companies like Saubel's can continue to thrive," said Smucker.

"The Saubel family would like to thank Congressman Smucker for stopping by our York location to talk about the impact that rising food costs, the cost to do business and supply chain issues have on small businesses, such as ours," said Betti Saubel, owner of Saubel's Markets.

"We have been in business for over 96 years and are third generation strong with fourth helping and learning the ropes now, but none of us or our ancestors have seen prices rising as rapidly as they have been in recent times. Staffing is another issue within the supermarket industry. We can't thank our employees enough for their hard work and dedication to our stores."

"We can definitely see the differences of what is in the carts of the consumers. Saubel's is doing what we can do to help combat the rising prices. We sure are proud to be almost 100 years old and still selling groceries to our local communities," Saubel said.
