Smucker Supports Family & Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act

Legislation would block Biden administration efforts to add 87,000 agents to aggressively audit middle-class Americans and small businesses
Washington, DC—Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11) voted for H.R. 23 the Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act. Smucker was an original cosponsor of the legislation introduced by Ways and Means Committee colleague Rep. Adrian Smith (NE-3).
“President Biden’s so-called “Inflation Reduction Act” was never about addressing rampant inflation caused by his own spending policies. Instead, the legislation doubled down on inflationary spending and threw billions at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) specifically to hire 87,000 new enforcement agents to audit hardworking middle-class Americans and small businesses. H.R. 23 repeals the billions in enforcement funding to the IRS to protect the middle class and small businesses.”
“Our legislation, however, does keep in place the funding for technology and customer service improvements at the IRS. I hear constantly from constituents across Pennsylvania’s 11th District, that the IRS is failing in its customer service mission. An effective government is a responsive government. The IRS needs to make significant efforts to improve its responsiveness to its customers—the American taxpayer,” said Rep. Smucker.

- Republicans fought for guardrails to protect middle and lower-income taxpayers from increased audit scrutiny – Democrats rejected these protections.
- According to CBO, Democrats’ supercharged IRS will cause audit rates to “rise for all taxpayers” and a conservative analysis shows that returning audit rates to 2010 levels would mean 1.2 million more audits with over 700,000 of those falling on taxpayers making $75,000 or less.
