WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.) issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s second State of the Union address:

“President Trump’s message of choosing greatness is one we should all aspire to – and it’s a message both parties can rally behind,” said Smucker. “We have made tremendous progress over the past year, especially with our economy and workforce thanks in large part to President Trump’s leadership.”

Job growth in January shattered expectations, with nonfarm payrolls surging by 304,000. It was the 100th month in a row for positive job creation, by far the longest streak on record.

“Though we have made gains, there’s still more work to be done, “ Smucker said. “We need to tackle the problems facing our country. That begins with keeping our country and borders safe and protecting American workers. We need to fix our aging infrastructure system. We need to address our deficient roads, bridges, ports, railways and airports. We must also lower the skyrocketing cost of healthcare and prescription drugs. Far too often, too many people struggle to afford basic healthcare.

“In order to make America a better place, we must solve our problems and reach across the aisle. We must act. I’m looking forward to with my fellow congressmembers to find solutions to improve our country,” Smucker said. “Let’s get to work.”
