Smucker Opposes Democrats’ Legislation Which Eliminates Religious Freedom Protections

Washington, DC – Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11) opposed H.R. 8373 and released the following statement:

"I opposed the Democrats' legislation which eliminates protections for the free exercise of religious beliefs which were affirmed by the Supreme Court in the cases of Burwell vs. Hobby Lobby Stores and Conestoga Wood Specialties vs. Burwell. The Democrats' attempt to do away with those hard-fought protections of the exercise of religious freedom is simply wrong.

Rather than supporting the Democrats' radical legislation to eviscerate religious freedoms, I supported legislation, H.R. 8421, introduced by Rep. Bice to prevent any state from banning FDA approved contraception. Importantly, this legislation preserves religious freedom and conscience protections while maintaining state regulation of the practice of medicine and pharmacy," said Smucker.
