Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Pennsylvania Congressman Lloyd Smucker (PA-11) issued the following statement after President Trump officially signed the United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA) into law:

“The USMCA delivers on the promise President Trump made to replace the outdated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. This deal marks a tremendous victory for Pennsylvania workers, farmers, manufacturers, and businesses. It has the potential to create nearly 600,000 jobs and generate up to $235 billion in economic activity.”

“In Pennsylvania, trade with Canada and Mexico is essential. Over 42,000 jobs depend upon manufacturing exports to Canada and Mexico. The USMCA will provide businesses across the Commonwealth with new opportunities and will create new jobs with family-sustaining wages.

“The signing of the USMCA into law means expanding and opening new market access for our Pennsylvania dairy, egg and poultry producers. New markets are welcome news for the nearly 7,000 family-owned and operated farms in PA-11. Our farmers in York and Lancaster Counties, who are national leaders in the production of milk and eggs, have only asked for a level playing field which to compete.

“This modern trade deal brings our trade relationship with Canada and Mexico into the 21st century, protecting American intellectual property and ensuring strong, effective protections for innovators and creators. I congratulate the President for delivering on his promise, and I look forward to continuing to work with him to implement policies that benefit Pennsylvania and our nation.”
