Smucker Debt Commission Proposal Adopted
Proposal Included as part of Proposed FY2024 Budget
Washington—Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11), a senior member of the House Budget Committee, voted for the Fiscal Year 2024 Concurrent Budget Resolution during the Committee’s markup today. Included in the Republican budget is a Smucker-led proposal to create a bipartisan debt commission.
“With over $33 trillion in debt, America’s fiscal trajectory is bleak. Congress must take steps to change that trajectory and exercise fiscal discipline. House Republicans on the Budget Committee took a step in the right direction by advancing this concurrent budget resolution. However, we must continue to make progress on addressing our debt to avoid fiscal calamity.
Establishing a bipartisan debt commission is among my chief priorities and I am pleased that this concurrent resolution calls for its creation. This commission will conduct a comprehensive review of the country's finances, educate the public, and develop recommendations for achieving long-term fiscal sustainability.
Our constituents expect us to represent them in Washington as responsible stewards of their tax dollars. We can change our fiscal trajectory, but we must act swiftly and with a common understanding of what is driving our debt,” said Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11).
