ICYMI: Speaker Ryan Praises Smucker-Supported CTE Legislation
Washington, D.C. – In case you missed it, House Speaker Paul Ryan today praised bipartisan legislation cosponsored by U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-16) at his weekly press conference.
Speaker Ryan said:
“The Education and the Workforce Committee unanimously approved bipartisan legislation to improve career and technical education. This will make it easier to connect people with the skills they need to get good-paying, in-demand jobs.
“I’ve got to tell you, wherever I go, in Wisconsin last week, we have a real skills gap between the skills people need to get good paying jobs and the good paying jobs that are out there being offered.
“This is something that we really have to address and I am very pleased that the Education and the Workforce Committee is moving forward on this legislation.”

On Wednesday, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce passed theStrengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act with bipartisan support. Rep. Smucker is an original cosponsor of this legislation.
“I have my own experience with non-traditional education. I took college courses at night while operating a small construction company during the day,” said Rep. Smucker after it passed committee. “It’s important we accommodate the needs of many different types of students that are ready to learn and willing to work. State and local education leaders know their students better than bureaucrats in Washington. This bill will help those leaders align their priorities based on the specific needs of their students. I am proud to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance this important bill.”
